Practice the art of primitive fire making and take home a functioning bow drill kit! We will learn to identify the best wood and materials for starting a fire by friction - which includes the fire board, spindle, and tinder bundle.
We will focus on the anatomy of fire (tinder bundle, kindling species, etc), other fire making tools (magnesium rods, flint and steel) as well as look at other primitive fire making tools. Students will learn how to craft a fire in even the most harsh survival conditions.
This is a great activity for parent and child!

your favorite carving knife, if you have one
a sack lunch and/or snacks, water
Tuition:
$120 + $40 material fee

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Scott Brinton
Scott has over two decades of nature education experience. He has mentored hundreds of students in practical wilderness skills and nature awareness. He co-founded the Riekes Nature Studies Department in California, has taught Environmental Science for Peninsula College, and taught Islandwood’s graduate students in the Natural History and Ecology program. Most recently, Scott founded CedarRoot to help continue natural history and rural skills education.
He is passionate about applying ecological lessons discovered in nature to areas of regenerative design, sustainable development and agroecology. Education: B.A. in Agriculture and Alternative Energy, The Evergreen State College; M.A. in Natural History and Education, Prescott College.
